The predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis is an effective natural enemy of spider mite. Koppert was the first company that introduced this natural enemy. The adult predatory mite feeds on all stages of spider mite, and although the larva does not eat, the nymphs eat the eggs, larvae and protonymphs of spider mite. Although the mite cannot see, it can detect webs produced by spider mites through touch and leaf damage by scent. When Phytoseiulus finds its prey it sucks out its contents, leaving only the empty skin. The high predation rate on spider mites and its fast development makes Phytoseiulus very effective as a biological control agent.
